Transfigurations and Hindu Wisdom

Transfigurations and Hindu Wisdom

I've always been one to keep spirituality at arms length, but the process of composing 'Transfigurations' was one of the most artistically transformative experiences I've experienced in decades, largely due to its last movement, "Tat Tvam Asi" (Sanskrit for "Thou Art That").

Song Offerings, and the return of 'Fun Chris'

Song Offerings, and the return of 'Fun Chris'

In mid-2024, I was creatively worn down from having tackled a string of serious and challenging projects: The Lost Birds, Civilization VII and Turandot. After a pair of concerts in Vilnius, Lithuania, I realized that I really enjoyed conducting--and composing--my more upbeat, lively pieces like "Baba Yetu" and "Waloyo Yamoni". I was longing to get back to being 'Fun Chris', and fortunately, the opportunity presented itself in the form of a commission from Kantorei.

Live Gloriously (from Civilization VII)

Live Gloriously (from Civilization VII)

In the summer of 2023 I was simultaneously facing the two most high-pressure commissions of my entire career. The first was to complete Giacomo Puccini's final opera 'Turandot' for Washington National Opera--a huge challenge to fill the maestro's shoes, especially for a first-time opera composer like myself. The second commission, however, was equally daunting, but in a different way: I had to compose the theme to Civilization VII, and somehow match the bar I had set for myself with my previous Civilization themes: "Baba Yetu" and "Sogno di Volare".
